As the Irish used to put it, “it’s the Mass that matters.” The holy sacrifice of the Mass is the “source and summit of the Christian life” according to Vatican II. In the short years following the Council, the reformation of the Mass, replacing the pre-1962 Missal with the Mass of Paul VI (aka the Novus Ordo Missae), has unfortunately led to what amounts to a two-track Church.

The 2007 motu proprio Summorum Pontificum by Pope Benedict XVI lifted the need for episcopal permission to celebrate the Extraordinary Form (the Traditional Latin Mass) so any priest could celebrate it. This in turn led to a resurgent interest in the Mass that nurtured saints and sinners alike for over 500 years.

Archbishop Alexander Sample of Portland, OR, taught himself how to say the Latin Mass, and has nuggets of wisdom as to why the Church benefits from its celebration and the sense of balance needed to avoid extremist attitudes. He’s also an expert in sacred music, which is a much-overlooked element of the Divine Liturgy.

Perhaps because of movies like The Exorcist and TV shows like Ghost Hunters, one wonders if more people believe in demons than in angels.

Demonologist Adam Blai has devoted his life to training exorcist priests and lecturing on the different levels of demonic activity: temptation, oppression, infestation, and (the much rarer) possession. His sometimes harrowing experiences are found in his book, Hauntings, Possessions, and Exorcisms, which is part autobiography and part field manual.

The devil and his angels are real, but they are on a strong leash held by Jesus Christ. We need the grace of Christ to ask for more virtue, and greater faith, so we can live daily in victory over our common enemy.

Were you raised on Dr. Seuss? P.D. Eastman? The Hardy Boys? Maybe Anne of Green Gables? If the answer is yes to this genre and quality, then this interview will shock you. Author and educator Debbie DeGroff has put together a painfully brilliant collection of evidence showing the drip-by-drip degradation of books aimed at high schoolers, and younger.

Does the practice of psychiatry bring answers to suffering people or just more questions? How scientific is what we call psychiatry (as opposed to psychology), and how can it be integrated into the Christian faith? Dr. Aaron Kheriaty, MD has written about and pondered these questions deeply as a professor of psychiatry at the University of California Irvine and in private practice. This exchange of ideas and historical perspectives sheds a lot of light on questions Catholics and other Christians have about the world of psychiatry

When people in an otherwise civilized society want to die or want to kill other people, they must first come up with legit sounding euphemisms. “Death with dignity.” “Medical aid in dying.” “Clump of cells.” “Products of conception.” Same with racial hatred. First dehumanize, then act.

Or, first euphemize, then euthanize.

There has been one euthanasia or trans surgery story after another in the last few weeks. I found the right man in Wesley J. Smith to talk about them. He is a lawyer and award winning author of 13 books (see some gems below), and a senior fellow at the Discovery Institute’s Center on Human Exceptionalism. Smith is also a consultant to the Patients Rights Council.

Archbishop Julian Porteous is the Ordinary of Hobart, Tasmania, and an astute observer of Australian culture, particularly how fast it has veered toward militant secularism. The latest example is the law passed September, 2019, that provides jail time for priests who will not disclose what is confessed in the Sacrament of Reconciliation (aka Penance, or Confession) by, say, an abuser of minors.

This is an outrageous and unprecedented intrusion into the running of the Catholic Church in what is otherwise known as a free country. The rights of the Church are violated, and the challenge becomes down to the great difficulty in explaining why the Seal of Confession is substantially different from a relationship like attorney-client privilege.

Think this could only happen in secularist Australia? Think again. Secularist America is next: California and Louisiana legislatures have already tried the same stunt.

In June 1981, six Croatian teens (well, one was 10) went up Podbrdo Hill near the village of Medjugorje in then rural Yugoslavia. When they came down, they said they had seen “the Gospa” (Croatian for Lady). The local bishop, Pavao Žanić, was initially open to their claims but...after he interviewed them, and learned the full story, he knew it was a complete hoax.

If you do an internet search for “Medjugorje” you will find that the pro-apparition websites, books, DVDs, and prayer groups, positively swamp any critical sources. Yet the official judgment of the Catholic Church is clear: Medjugorje is rejected (officially, non constat de supernaturalitate). And yet Church leadership all the way up to Pope Francis treats the decades-sprawling phenomenon with a combination of kid gloves playing hot potato, to mix a metaphor.

The six seers have parlayed their so-called apparitions into consistently high sources of income, and the pilgrimage industry still rakes in millions each year off of naive, usually low information Catholics seeking solace or answers at the place.

Dr. E. Michael Jones, editor of Culture Wars magazine, wrote the first full length treatment of Medjugorje in 1988, and a book length account in 2010, which is why I invited him to give us an overview of the sprawling saga from the beginning. I do so with the intention of alerting my fellow Catholics who may be unaware (most are) of the truth about the Church’s discernment of this oddly toxic phenomenon.

Many people, especially Catholics, are vexed and confused about how the once admirable Catholic Church suddenly became identified with pedophilia, leadership corruption, duplicity, and worldly ideals having little to do with the gospel.

Author John Gravino has outlined two forces—one intellectual, one moral—working in tandem (although not always intentionally as allies) to create the present crisis. So the John Jay Report found that 81% of sexual abuse victims were teen boys (not “children”). But which moral theologians taught these predators in Roman collars?

And what about humanistic psychology? Ever hear of Carl Rogers and William Coulson—or Richard McCormick, SJ, or Andre Guindon, or Charles Curran? If the answer is no, this interview is the place to start understanding how the bleep we got here as a Church that claims to have been founded and sustained by Jesus Christ.

If Joseph Pearce had a superhero alter ego, it would be...Bookman! I know of very few other scholars more qualified to recommend the great books we all ought to read before we go to The Great Printer. The British born writer, editor, and professor of literature has spent his life mining the gold from the raw ore of books out there. How great to have a guide who can tell gold apart from fool’s gold.

How did the culture get so chaotic so quickly? Identity politics taints everything it touches; sexual minorities clamor for rights that didn’t exist five years ago; violence has replaced reason in public discourse.

How did we get here?

This is the gargantuan problem tackled by scholar and social critic Mary Eberstadt in her latest book, Primal Screams: How the Sexual Revolution Created Identity Politics. In light of the level of rage that has taken over public conversations, on and off line, how can we get traction with ideologues on the Left? Eberstadt says we must begin by listening and understanding.

It’s a classic David vs Goliath set up. Planned Parenthood veteran director lives in America illegally discovers serious moral and medical problems going on at the clinic she runs. Decides to blow the whistle. Planned Parenthood brass go after her immediately by firing her, poison the well of her reputation, plant narcotics in her desk, and suddenly care about her residence status.

That’s when Mayra decided to punch back twice as hard. She sued the largest provider of abortions in the world for wrongful dismissal, against the odds, and faced down witnesses with their grim-faced attorneys.

And won.

The unanimous jury judgment awarded her $3,000,000. This is her story.

Very few journalists who are practicing Catholics are willing to honestly tackle the corruption in the Church by naming names, digging until the truth is unearthed, confronting bad guys, making antagonists squirm.

This is what George Neumayr does, chiefly as a correspondent for The American Spectator, but elsewhere as a freelancer. He has gone after the DC Swamp (Catholic Edition) for some years now, telling the true, often horrifying, story of malfeasance and other forms of corruption (sexual and financial) among priests and prelates in what he describes as the epicenter of the priestly abuse scandal that first broke nationally in Boston 2002, with ongoing tremors to this day.

Neumayr is doing what the official Catholic establishment media won’t do. His work is a testament to the power one man can have when writing the truth.

I don’t know what it is about courageous people who stand up for the truth of things come what may—including being banned, censored and lied about—but I’m drawn to them.

Gemma O’Doherty is one of them.

The multi-awarded Irish journalist and filmmaker, and foundress of Anti-Corruption Ireland, has made a career going after said corruption in the Garda (national police force), the Government, and the intertwining among these institutions and the Church, or in her words, “the cosy cartel that exists between the press, power, and the police in this country.”

To this day, she has never run out of material.

Given the Golden Boot Award from The Irish Independent, Ireland’s largest daily newspaper (owned by Clinton crony billionaire Denis O'Brien), Gemma took to YouTube, with the same unPC tenacity that characterized her style.

And then parent company Google took both her channels down for violations of—wait for it—corporate “hate speech” rules. This can happen when you a) are a practicing Catholic, b) won’t be boxed into a single “conservative” box; and c) have a thing or two to say about uncontrolled immigration.

There has always been the temptation in Christian history to conflate the humanitarian impulse with the kingdom of heaven. Today, this conflation has taken on various and sundry dangerous forms: liberation theology, globalism and the erasure of nation states, philanthropy for purely human motives, and the like.

Are we to be salt of the earth and to love our enemies as Christ taught, or are we to be sugar and have no enemies as the “religion of humanity” teaches? The often confusing pronouncements by Pope Francis seem to manifest this blurring of classical distinctions.

Professor Daniel J. Mahoney of Assumption College in Worcester, MA, has nailed the basic problem in a new book, The Idol of Our Age: How the Religion of Humanity Subverts Christianity. We talked about the many dangerous ideas arising from the book and how to counter them.

French educated attorney and author (and now Moscow resident) Alexandre Havard has made it his life mission to study patterns of leadership: what works, what doesn’t, and how to heal the deeper issues present in the crisis of leadership.

Retired Navy SEAL Commander Jocko Willink famously said, “There are no bad teams, only bad team leaders.” The implications of this for the Christian Church are as enormous as they are obvious. Havard’s books and lectures are not chiefly designed for a faith context but tap into universal truths about human nature, natural law, human temperaments, and what makes a leader truly excellent.

Most Americans (and many Canadians!) tend to view the political climate in Canada as hopeless, being run indirectly by LGBT activists, leftist public officials, neo-Marxist advisors, and most of it aided and abetted by a very liberal media establishment.

Even if this hyperbole were true, there are some people with conservative principles willing to step into the breach and run for office. My guest this week is one of them. Tanya Granic Allen is a wife, mother, professional communicator, parental rights advocate—and a practicing Catholic.

In 2018, despite rising popularity among Ontario voters, she was removed (illegally?) by Premier Doug Ford as a candidate for the Progressive Conservative Party leadership. That’s a longer side-bar story, but in this interview, she talks about “social conservative” values and how they shape voters’ decisions as much as economic or other factors. Her presidency of PAFE (Parents As First Educators) put pro-family, anti-sex education concerns in the public’s mind, which is a rare set of priorities in a Canadian politician. (Even privately pro-life ones are generally chicken to talk about it.)

But this unabashedly pro-life Catholic leader is a sign of great hope for a country under the spell of rabid secularism for too long.

The news satire site The Babylon Bee has run into a problem: the crazy world has become harder and harder to satirize. Aimed primarily (at least originally) at evangelical readers, “the Bee” has amassed a much larger audience including many Catholics who also enjoy Eye of the Tiber.

A few headline examples:

Christian Extremists Hit Downtown London; Dozens Of Tracts Passed Out

Sheltered Atheist Kid Not Allowed To Watch 'VeggieTales'

Christian Rushes To Get HIV Test After Brief Eye Contact With Gay Person

Out-Of-Touch Youth Pastor Still Saying 'WASSSSUUUUUP!?!?!'

Planned Parenthood Defends Bill Cosby: 'Sexual Assault Is Only 3% Of What He Does'

But as editor-in-chief Kyle Mann (this week’s guest) points out, there’s always a nugget of truth beneath the crust of comedy. Satire serves more than one purpose. Poking fun of Christian foibles and “worst practices” is not only fun, it reflects a certain confident humility. And it may even plants seeds of faith. Enjoy—and hey, lighten up!

In this episode you will learn

  • How Kyle came to his commitment to Christ
  • The origins of The Babylon Bee idea
  • Why so few Christians appreciate self-critical humor
  • Why satire is so hard to pull off today
  • How the Bee editors decide what “going too far” means
  • Possibilities of increased interfaith understanding based on what Protestants and Catholics both find hilarious
  • Why comedy is “divine”
  • How the best comedy draws close to reality but spins it into a manageable off-beat direction

Stories of conservative thought being silenced and censored online is now a problem so obvious that liberals like Canadian feminist (I know, almost a tautology) Meghan Murphy are taking note. Murphy was was banned for life from Twitter for using the birth name of a transgender person. The horror!

Matthew Peterson, vice president of education at the Claremont Institute, has had enough. He’s on a mission to gather together anyone—conservative or otherwise—motivated enough to fight back against the narrow-minded, one-sided agendae of Big Tech. How is it just that Google, Twitter, Facebook and other social media platforms routinely soft-ban or outright remove influencers with unapproved opinions?

Today’s heretics in the Church of SJWs may not be burned at the stake. They’re just booted out of polite cyber society. Then again, given the track record of violence by groups like Antifa, give them a chance…

Okay, this is a personal biggie. To get to talk to the mother of the baby boy, James Fulton Engstrom, who was stillborn on September 16, 2010, after a healthy pregnancy. The baby stayed dead for 61 minutes.

Let that sink in.

James’s parents, Bonnie and Travis, began praying—hoping very much against hope—for the intercession of Archbishop Fulton Sheen, who was born and raised near their hometown, to “do something!”

After 61 minutes, something totally unexpected and yet longed for happened. The baby’s heart quickened into a healthy rhythm, and a lovely pink flush replaced the ashen gray of his corpse. TOTALLY impossible, according to every medical expert who has examined the case, and yet it happened. But they weren’t out of the woods. Sweet Baby James, by all evidence, would never recover from the catastrophic loss of oxygen. Doctors predicted the worst.

The Engstroms leveraged social media and doubled down on the heavenly “ask.” People in many countries came to the assistance with prayers. And none of the medical disasters came to pass. James was, and is, normal.

This is an incredible story, and is set to be the bona fide miracle that will make “Uncle Fultie” become Blessed Fulton J. Sheen, one step away from canonization. Ah, cool!

The title  a double meaning, his legal appeal on charges of sexual abuse that happened June 4-5, 2019, and his personal appeal as a man and as a Christian. I could have called it Everything You Know About the Pell Trial Is Wrong.

My guest this week explains why. Peter Westmore is the former President of the National Civic Council, and a writer for News Weekly. Westmore attended both trials of Cardinal Pell (and the appeal last week) and heard all the evidence provided to the court—twice. In June 2015, a complainant accused George Cardinal Pell of sexual assault (forced oral sex and genital fondling) involving two choir boys in the sacristy moments after Sunday Mass at the Melbourne Cathedral, in broad daylight, with Pell in full liturgical vestments, with the door open, in a church swarming with people leaving the building or strolling the nearby hallways.

None of the 25 witnesses at each trial (the first one of which ended in a hung jury) could attest to the truth of the claimant’s charges, which themselves changed over time. The other boy ended up overdosing on heroin, and, according to his own mother’s testimony, denied ever been sexually abused. The entire case against Cardinal Pell rests on one man’s say-so, with multiple layers of improbability if not complete impossibility.

An interesting, and telling, fact: Pope Francis has not suspended Pell’s priestly faculties despite the guilty verdict, while Ted McCarrick (never tried in court) was laicized and exiled to Kansas.

Lila Rose fought abortion before fighting abortion was cool. At the tender age of 15, she began the Live Action apostolate from her parents’ living room. She knew it was killing babies and wounding their mothers and fathers, and that “thoughts and prayers” alone is not a strategy.

By 18, the then Evangelical Christian Lila began doing undercover-with-hidden-cam work investigating Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers. What she saw and heard—and recorded for the world to see—shocked her. And so LiveAction.org was born and quickly grew.

Ten years out, and Live Action is a top leader and influencer in the area of authentic (and brave) pro-life education. As Lila points out, it’s not just about “learning facts.” It’s about how to put those facts—to quote St. Mother Teresa—into a  living action. Hence, Live Action. Listen to Lila unfold the story of how the non-profit, non-partisan apostolate became a powerhouse model for other pro-lifers wondering what to do about the problem.

Out of nowhere, in a matter of weeks, Pete Buttigieg, the Gay Mayor of South Bend, IN, is a well-known fixture in the American media consumer’s psyche as a candidate for President of the United States. Time Magazine put him on the cover standing awkwardly with his husband (or is it wife?) Chasten with the headline “First Family.” Like, totally normal.

Dr. E. Michael Jones, author of 12+ books on faith and culture and the editor of Culture Wars Magazine has written a concise biography about Mayer Pete titled Home Alone, a riff on the candidate’s memoirs (well, a memoir cum political manifesto), Shortest Way Home: One Mayor's Challenge and a Model for America's Future.

As it happens, Mayor Pete grew up three doors down on the same street as the Jones family i South Bend. Jones’s youngest son Adam attended the same school, and was also a valedictorian (in different years, of course) and both went to Harvard.

Yet, Mayor Pete’s memoirs somehow—gosh, who knows why—there is no mention of neighbors like the Jones family. As Jones makes clear, almost nothing is what it appears when it comes to this longshot Democrat Party candidate.
