“Brother, are you saved?” is the question most Catholics are not comfortable hearing. In fact, Catholics tend not to talk about “being saved” or even “salvation” itself, even though the whole point of the incarnation of Christ is enshrined front and center in the Creed, “for us men and for our salvation….”

So what is it, and why do so few Catholics seem able or even interested in talking about it? It’s a curious thing. Catholics seem more likely to couch it in terms of “going to heaven” rather than “being saved” which sounds Protestant. Dr. Michael Barber, associate professor of sacred Scripture and theology at the Augustine Institute, sets the record straight in this fact-laden interview about the One Thing that matters in this life and the life to come.

Why does Planned Parenthood target black neighborhood for abortion for sale? Why are there so few high-profile black pastors who are known for pro-life advocacy? Why do so few people know that Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood was a diehard eugenics supporter?

Rev. Walter Hoye has answers. He also has some practical wisdom to impart, and a courageous non-violent witness to emulate. This helps explain why Alveda King, the niece of Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., wrote the powerful Foreword to Walter’s biography (see link below). Hoye chose 30 days in jail time in 2009 for violating an absurd City of Oakland ordinance called a “bubble law” (which was created for him). What was his crime?

He held up a sign that read, “God loves you and your baby; let us help you.” No yelling, no intimidation, no pushy activism. Just a ministry of presence to give scared young women an alternative to what they’re about to choose.

Sometimes outsiders behave like insiders and vice versa. Agnostic Jewish author and critic David Horowitz has collected an awful lot of important social and historical information and put it all in one place: his new book Dark Agenda: The War to Destroy Christian America.

Why defend Christian America from her enemies—many of them liberal Jews at the forefront of radical movements? Because, inter alia, Horowitz is a recovering liberal radical himself and he knows the targets of his book and their rabid agenda very well.

Who cares about boys? Almost….nobody! Our culture focuses on feminist concerns, the wage gap myth, girls’ health, and so on. Boys and boyhood are simply not interesting or valuable enough for the elites to talk about.

Dr. Anthony Esolen had enough. So he wrote a fine book, Defending Boyhood, which lays out the problem, provides some historical context along with tons of examples from novels and movies. The need to support and defend boyhood is urgent and (if you have eyes to see) obvious.

In this episode you will learn

  • Why there is no perfect “golden age” where things were perfect but the principles and values of boyhood were much healthier
  • The effect of the failed Sexual Revolution on the world of boys
  • Why boys are in special need of rituals of self-discovery in ways girls are not
  • The connection between absent or abusive fathers and the homosexual impulse
  • How contraception disrupted the relationship between men and women, and hence the family, and how this affected our perception of boys (and children in general)
  • Why boys love to sing if the songs tell manly tales
  • How to survive in a culture bereft of institutions and clubs devoted to the care and growth of boys qua boys.

What? Another too-little-too-late book defending marriage? Dr. Scott Hahn thinks the battle has just begun for a resurgent reverence for marriage as its been defined for 3000+ years, and was raised to the dignity of a Sacrament by Jesus Christ.

Marriage as Sacrament is badly misunderstood today, which is part of the reason why so many people leave their spouses when the going gets tough. Hahn, professor of theology at Franciscan University of Steubenville, OH, and author of over 40 books, knows firsthand how tough the going can get. Share this very personal interview with one of the best known and respected Catholic thinkers and influencers in American Church history.

In this episode you will learn

  • The deeper meaning of “it is not good for the man to be alone” (Genesis 2:18)
  • Why the Church calls marriage the Sacrament of “Matrimony”
  • The connection between the 1930 Anglican decision to allow contraception and the current crisis of the definition of marriage
  • Why marriage is the cell of the entire body of the Church and of the broader society
  • How couples who stick together provide not just a solid foundation for their kids but a living homily to others
  • Why the Sacrament of Matrimony is impossible without the “third party” of Jesus Christ

Socrates said that the order of the city was the order of the soul writ large. That observation is all the more true today—and not a compliment to the modern soul or the modern city. Most people simply don’t advert to the quiet influence the surrounding architecture has on their psyche: the shape and scale of buildings, the order and proportion (or lack thereof). The father of modern Bauhaus architecture is the German Walter Gropius, a promiscuous cad who married a promiscuous shrew named Anna Mahler, wife of composer Gustav Mahler. Dr. E. Michael Jones, editor of Culture Wars magazine says that Gropius painted into his architectural vision a radically new kind of building and with it, a revolution in urban planning.

In this episode you will learn

  • The subtle (?) ways in which the architecture that surrounds us tells us who we are and what our life’s priorities ought to be
  • How Gropius’s rationalization of his own degeneracy got transmuted into buildings built purely for function, and ugly as sin besides
  • Why rebellion against Logos leads to disorder and chaos in the external design of things
  • What public housing Projects in Chicago, suburban Moscow, and industrial Poland have in common
  • Why classical architecture as nurtured by Catholic principles and sound philosophy can lead the way to beautify both home and church design

Mike Lindell had a dream. Actually, he’s had a series of dreams, which have all come true. The founder and CEO of MyPillow.com—chances are good you’ve seen one of his infomercials—never dreamed (pardon the pun) that his longtime crack addiction would be a thing of the past.

Nor that he would be a major financial backer of a hit movie that was predicted to bite the box office dust.

And yet, Unplanned starring Ashley Bratcher doubled its predicted opening weekend take and continues to touch hearts and minds, thanks in part to Lindell’s vision for cultural change surrounding abortion. He is also generous in using his large platform to the cause near and dear to him: helping addicts get clean. His whole story is preposterous, if you think about it.

In this episode you will learn

  • How this non-MBA small business owner and inventor escaped a life-threatening addiction to crack cocaine.
  • Why Lindell is “all in” for President Donald Trump and how he (Lindell) knew Trump was not only going to be elected president, but would far surpass anyone’s expectations.
  • Why he is using his business platform to help fellow suffering addicts.
  • How he learned that Abby Johnson’s story was a thing in the first place.
  • Anecdotes from the filming of Unplanned.
  • Just how bad the opioid addiction crisis is, and how Mike Lindell is part of the solution.

Have you noticed how few people are willing to oppose publically the transgender agenda, no matter how dangerous to young mind—not to mention to the suffering people who go through with the mutilation surgery?

Oh, many people will privately object, and tutt tutt their disapproval.

British journalist and writer Caroline Farrow knows all about the first option. The Catholic wife and mother of five young kids appeared on ITV’s  “Good Morning Britain” in September 2018, and used the Wrong Pronoun for the son of trans activist activist Susie Green, with whom Farrow was debating. The son was born Jack, a male, and subjected to the mutilation procedure on his 16th birthday in that bastion of high tech surgery, Thailand, and now goes by Jackie. Soon after, she described the situation as child abuse and the procedure in correct medical terminology on Twitter.

That’s why the Surrey Police called her recently with concerrrrrrrrrns.

She was “invited” to have a “voluntary” meeting with law enforcement after Ms. Green sicced them on her, scouring the internet for No Good Bad Things she may have said.  All for using words on television and Twitter felt to be hurtful and offensive.

Monty Python, meet George Orwell. Caroline Farrow’s story is of a piece with my first interview with Dr. Jordan Peterson back in February, 2017, on compelled speech. In some ways, Peterson is the theory, Farrow the practice.

If you do an online search, the MSM routinely slaps together unflattering photos of the attractive Mrs. Farrow, label her a “devout Catholic” (in the tone of racists when they say “colored woman”), and invariably describe her comments as “transphobic.” Her story is, inter alia, an invitation for Catholics and other men of good will to find their courage and stand up to the new onslaught against free speech and religious freedom.

I was going to title this episode The Two Abbys, but that would have led to misunderstandings. It’s a two-hander featuring actress Ashley Bratcher and the woman she plays in the movie Unplanned, former Planned Parenthood Director Abby Johnson.

Unplanned came out after Gosnell and before Roe v Wade, the trio of strongly pro-life films of 2018 and 2019. Both the real life heroine Abby and the actress who brings her story to the screen thanks to co-writers Cary Solomon and Chuck Konzelman.  An amazing story, now in cinematic garb.

In this episode you will learn

  • How the book came about to begin with
  • Why Hollywood’s MPAA gave it a Rated R rating and why this may help the movie’s box office
  • The secret that the mother of actress Ashley Bratcher’s confessed to her after she got the role and had begin filming
  • Why this is the kind of movie that changes the game regarding the reality of abortion
  • Anecdotes galore from the set

Carrie Gress is onto something extremely important. We all talk about the anti-Christ, and toxic masculinity, but what about the anti-Mary and toxic femininity? Isn’t our culture marinating in both? Isn’t this a problem hiding in plain sight?

Dr. Gress is a writer, teacher, and candle-maker (and wife and homeschooling mom) whose latest book, The Anti-Mary Exposed: Rescuing the Culture From  Toxic Femininity, goes upstream from conventional thinking about feminism and the sexual chaos around us.

After this interview, you will know:

  • The philosophical roots of second wave feminism
  • Why so many feminists are lesbian or pro-LGBT
  • Why you can’t have the spirit of anti-Christ without the spirit of anti-Mary
  • How differently some women are treated by the media elites, like Sarah Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Dana Loesch
  • How the twin aims of feminism (take down motherhood and virginity) ar resolved and healed in the person and mission of Our Lady (honored for 2000 years as Mother and Virgin)
  • Why the answer to the toxicity is ever ancient, ever new: doing the will of God the Father in all things

Everything you know about the guilty verdict of George Cardinal Pell—along with the background and nature of the charges—is wrong. While sexual abuse is an abhorrent crime, and while Catholic bishops do not have a stellar record of reporting and stopping such crimes, this particular case stinks to high heaven.

George Weigel, best known as the biographer of Pope St. John Paul II, has known His Eminence for over 50 years. He has also closely examined the facts of the allegations and the context of Australian Church/State politics. There is something very, very smelly here.

After this interview, you will know:

  • Why is was not just unlikely, but virtually impossible, that Pell could have done what he was alleged to have done two two choir boys in the sacristy of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Melbourne back in 1996
  • The ways in which the whole Australian justice system is also on trial here
  • How the ideological collusion between the Victoria police and the Aussie media machine whipped up public venom against Cardinal Pell
  • The ways in which George Pell serves as an ideal target for militant secularists in Australia
  • Key facts that would have ordinarily exculpated someone so accused
  • Pell’s chances for acquittal in his upcoming (June 2019) appeal

Gavin McInnes (muhKINNis) defies any kind of shorthand description. The perpetually lied about McInnes is, inter alia, the co-founder of Vice magazine, the founder of the Proud Boys, a social critic and commentator, a satirist so good his enemies don’t get him, a writer, an ex-atheist Catholic convert, and a resolute family man.

He’s also stinking hilarious, if potty mouthed. (Maybe partly why?) So, potty word alert on this one.

Banned from YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Amazon—and the sovereign country of Australia owing to his “bad character”—Gavin has also launched a lawsuit against the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) for slandering him as a “hate group” (ironic, considering what the SPLC doe$ for a living) and damaging is career.

After this interview, you will know:

  • The background to his exit from the Proud Boys group (it’s not what you’d think)
  • Why the Right wants to debate and the Left wants to delete
  • Why the far Left became allies with militant Islam
  • What “Western chauvinism” means and doesn’t mean
  • Where his punch-back-twice-as-hard attitude comes from
  • Why his woke (and rumor has it fictional) brother Miles McInnes is being hired by Rebel Media

The Roots of The Priestly Abuse Scandal—Part III

This is the third interview in a four-part series on the roots of the pederast priest crisis.

I have been reading Dr. Judith Reisman’s courageous research since 1989, when her explosive book, Kinsey, Sex, and Fraud, came out, exploding diehard myths about the sadomasochist pervert who spawned the Playboy Philosophy and Fake Sex Science.

Reisman has been fighting the toxic and deadly effects of Kinsey’s failed Sexual Revolution long before it was cool to do so.

She is a Research Professor at Liberty University School of Law, a scientific adviser, California Protective Parents Association, and a distinguished Senior Fellow at the Inter-American Institute, and the author of books you need to read (see below) if you want to understand why Kinsey is the father of the anti-family, anti-woman, anti-chastity chaos and destruction known as the Sexual Revolution. Sixties. What an honor to introduce her and her work to a new international audience!

Oh, and YouTube will most certainly demonetize this interview. If you can support this show, please do so here. Our show is 100% listener supported.

#BiasAgainstTheTruth

In this episode you will learn

  • The basic bio of Alfred Kinsey, child abuser, homosexual, proven liar
  • How his 1948 book Sexual Behavior In the Human Male caught the lifelong attention of Hugh Hefner, who vowed to become Kinsey’s personal “pamphleteer”
  • How Playboy magazine started as revenge porn by Hefner, whose first wife Mildred cheated on him
  • Specific examples from the Kinsey book showing child sexal abuse and torture
  • Concrete examples of how Kinsey flat out lied to rationalize and spread his own degenerate behavior
  • How the Catholic Bishops naively accepted the advice of Kinsey-taught psychological “experts” to disastrous results
  • How the same experts who gave evil advice to the Church are criticizing her for encouraging the very behavior they promoted
  • Why heterosexual porn is inherently homosexual

The Roots of The Priestly Abuse Scandal—Part II

The renowned Dutch psychiatrist and Nazi camp survivor Conrad Baars, MD, diagnosed the roots of the current priesthood crisis some 50 years ago. His insights into what he and longtime collaborator Dr. Anna Terruwe called “deprivation neurosis” are unusually accurate and they anticipate today’s headlines.

As a therapist, writer, and editor, his daughter Suzanne Baars is carrying on her father’s work She dives deep into her late father’s work and how it applies to the current scandals.

In this episode you will learn

  • How Baars’ experience of enduring 19 months in the dreaded Buchenwald concentration camp formed and confirmed in him in the work of psychiatry
  • The role played by the anthropology of St. Thomas Aquinas in Baars’ insights into emotional health
  • Why true affirmation is so rare, and yet provides the answer to loneliness, compulsive habits, and deprivation neurosis
  • How emotional immaturity has given rise to the porn pandemic, divorce, and a generation of beta males
  • The relationship between essentially weak men and maternal ways of governing
  • Why priests need to be willing to be hurt and to hurt

This is the first in a series on the roots of the priestly abuse scandal. I know, a sad and depressing topic. But we have to “go there” if we want to “get there.”

Father Paul Sullins, PhD, author and professor emeritus of sociology at the Catholic University of America, has done us all a huge favor. He has collated and made sense of the data drawn from the John Jay Report, the data from the USCCB, the 2002 Los Angeles Times poll about homosexual priests, the data of the Pennsylvania Grand Jury Reports, and intel from CARA (Center for Applied Research In the Apostolate).

It’s all in one place, a study done in collaboration with The Ruth Institute. Get the link below. His findings are stunning and sobering.

In this episode you will learn

  • Approximately how many boys would NOT have had their lives badly damaged by homosexual priests had the ratio of homosexuals in the priesthood had not skyrocketed from 1950-1980s.
  • Why we need to boldly tell the truth about the real causes of the crisis
  • The approximate proportion of priests today between 65 and 85 who are homosexual
  • Why the crisis is not about clericalism
  • Solid facts to back up bad logic and anti-Catholic arguments about celibacy, and the truth of what has happened in the last 50 years regarding predator behavior among some priests

Self-described feminist singer Paula Cole had a hit single in 1996 titled Where Have All the Cowboys Gone,” in which she bemoaned the dearth of real men (“Where is my John Wayne; where is my prairie song; where is my happy ending; where have all the cowboys gone?”)

Something happened to men in the last 50 years. They stopped being men and became guys, and now, in tragic numbers, feckless soy boys.

Dr. Taylor Marshall and Tim Gordon of the smashing TnT podcast (Taylor Marshall and co-host Tim Gordon) and YouTube channel join me to talk about the death of men and how it has affected the behavior of the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. What would a resurrection of men look like?

In this episode you will learn

  • Why we need to stop validating the word feminism (namely its toxic meaning) with some kind of nice adjective, like “Christian feminism,” “new feminism.”
  • The roots of the crisis of masculinity
  • How this crisis manifests itself in the disappointing behavior of so many priests, bishops, and cardinals
  • Why the biblical analogy of Christ as Bridegroom and the Church as Bride remains the fundamental truth of the relationship between the sexes
  • The basic distinction between masculine and feminine, and why the sexes are not “equal” but complementary.
  • The true meaning of submission in Ephesians 5 and why it doesn’t mean subjugation

We read a lot about “the priestly sex abuse scandal,” which goes by various names, most of them euphemisms meant to deflect the truth of the matter. Joseph Sciambra knows all about the deflection of truth. He grew up in the San Francisco Bay area, a product of the beige Catholicism Lite of the 1970s and 80s.

Casual porn use starting before he was ten led him down an increasingly perverse path including a complete embrace of the homosexual lifestyle. He performed in gay porn. He had a near-death experience. He had terrifying encounters with the demonic. And Jesus Christ liberated him.

Joseph became friends with the founding father of reparative therapy, Dr. Joseph Nicolosi, PhD, and the founder of the Courage apostolate. Father John Harvey, OFSF.

His fine blog, josephsciambra.com, is the go-to place if you want to see the pro-LGTB dioceses, archdioceses, gay-friendly prelates and programs infecting the Catholic Church in America and beyond. In this interview, we discuss just how lavender is the Church today, even after the ostensible efforts at ridding the Church of what Pope Benedict XVI called “the moral filth”?

In this episode you will learn

  • How he escaped the brutal, dark world of the Castro District homosexual life
  • Why homosexuals cannot function as healthy, effective Catholic priests
  • How homosexuality became normalized through pop culture
  • The reasons why Sciambra believes the “born that way” theory is dead wrong
  • How chastity and living the sacramental life of Christ continues to change his life
  • His message to bishops and archbishops who allow the LGTB agenda to take root in their dioceses

If the story of the 1973 Roe v Wade Supreme Court decision, which gave us the unlimited abortion licence, had been filmed as a pro-abortion message movie, the money would have rolled in and financed the project in a single day.

But when actor director Nick Loeb told the truth about the events of 1973, he and his production crew faced opposition, rejection, and no shortage of hatred thrown their way. They had to shoot under a fake name (“1973”) just to stay under the radar. But the final title is Roe v Wade, starring Jon Voight, Robert Davi, and Stacey Dash, with some surprise cameos we can’t release yet. It’s set for a 2019 release, unless further attacks delay its debut.

Loeb (who plays my former guest Dr. Bernard Nathanson, RIP) tells the behind-the-scenes story about writing, producing, and co-starring in Roe v Wade, the most divisive and little understood legal decision in American history.

In this episode you will learn

  • Why this story is personal to its main creator, Nick Loeb, who is battling his ex-fiancee Sofia Vergara over their frozen embryos
  • The real life players behind the headlines and the parts they played, and the lies they told
  • Why Hollywood and its MSM allies have tried to squash, ban, and otherwise impede the making and advertising of this movie
  • Information about Norma McCorvey (“Jane Roe” of the decision) and Margaret Sanger you never knew
  • How each round of push-back and persecution resulted in increased support from the public for the project

Resources mentioned in this episode

  • The lyrics to a bawdy song Nathanson (before his conversion) and his fellow OB-GYN interns used to sing about the money to be made through abortion:

    There's a fortune . . . in abortion

Just a twist of the wrist and you're through.

The population . . . of the nation

Won't grow if it's left up to you.

In the daytime . . . in the nighttime

There is always some work to undo.

    Oh, there's a fortune . . . in abortion

But you'll wind up in the pen before you're through.

    Now there's a gold mine . . . in the sex line

And it's so easy to do.

Not only rabbits . . . have those habits

So why worry 'bout typhoid and flu?

You never bother . . . the future father

And there are so many of them, too.

    Oh, there's a fortune . . . in abortion

But you'll wind up in the pen before you're through.

Why is it that the pro-life side is 99% peaceful and happy and marches on behalf of others, and the pro-choice side is 99% angry or violent and marches for themselves?

Bas Rutten was basically the small skinny guy in the Charles Atlas comic book advertisement, “The insult that made a man out of Mac.” Rutten had two major health issues that made him target for bullies: eczema and asthma. Puffing around the schoolyard out of breath, he got called “leper” and other epithets kids love to be called, and taunted with violence. This went on for 14 years, until, against his parents wishes, little Rutten took a martial arts class and decided to stop running from the chief bully and his posse.

One hard punch to said bully’s fragile resulted in a free visit to the hospital. And it changed Bas Rutten’s life forever, leading him to a career about which few athletes can boast. Bas Rutten eventually became UFC World Champion and was inducted into the MMA (mixed martial arts) Hall of Fame.

He’s also a deeply devoted Catholic convert and family man.

In this interview you will learn:

  • How a sickly young Dutch boy went from bully fodder to world champion fighter
  • How the rules for MMA matches maximize the safety of the competitors
  • Anecdotes galore about motivation, conviction, and the stamina it takes to be the best of the best in the world
  • His advice for parents with kids who are being bullied
  • His terrifying encounters with the ghost of a dead woman and how his bold confrontation with her resolved the trouble
  • Why Bas prays all his prayers in Latin, the mother tongue of the Church

Here it is, and here he is. Marco Tosatti has been covering the Holy See since 1981. His written work appears in La Stampa and La Nuova Bussola Quotidiana. Among his books are, The Prophecy of Fatima, and Investigation of the Holy Shroud. He blogs at www.marcotosatti.com.

He is also the trusted friend of Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, whose public letters to Pope Francis indicting him for knowingly rehabilitating Uncle Ted McCarrick the Molester and calling for the Pope’s resignation. Very few people know the inside story of those letters and how they came to be. Until now.

In this episode you will learn

  • Who contacted whom about writing and publishing the letters
  • The context of the Letters and what they portend for a Catholic Church in crisis
  • How the Catholic Faith is perceived by the press in Europe vs in the United States
  • More details of the increasingly problematic papacy of Jorge Mario Bergoglio
  • The likelihood of any real reform or purification on the part of the February 2019 meetings in Rome about the sexual abuse crisis (clue: the pope appointed Cardinal Blase “rabbit hole” Cupich of Chicago to the organizing committee

The men who have defended his character and called for a full investigation of the charges are all well known defenders of orthodoxy. In light of the fact that Archbishop had no hope of promotion, what does all this say about the probability that he is telling the truth?

This week’s guest is a mentor and kind of spiritual mother to Milo Yiannopoulos (whose very candid interview with me was Episode 101) and wrote the bracing Foreword to his latest book (see link below). Dr Rachel Fulton Brown is a tenured professor of history at the University of Chicago, and a renowned medieval scholar with a speciality in the area of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

She is also a fervent convert to the Catholic Faith. In this episode we dive deep into the biblical and historical roots of the role of the Blessed Mother in salvation history, and suggest ways to answer objections to the truth about Mary.

In this episode you will learn:

  • Why we say Mary is the Mother of God and not just the Mother of Jesus
  • Why all Marian doctrine is Christological in nature
  • How the medieval era got things right regarding the role of Mary in the life of the Church
  • When devotion to Mary went into eclipse and how to revive it
  • Why Our Lady is a powerful intercessor for all mankind, not just Catholics
  • The reason why all the titles of Mary in all the litanies can never exhaust her beauty nor the full truth about her person and mission.

Dec 25, 2018

This episode debuted exactly a year ago, and I could think of no better show this year to honor my all-time favorite movie, Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life (1947)  through the eyes of two women with close ties to its creation.

If Mr. Capra didn't write it, why do I call it “Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life? It's because that’s how the movie was marketed, which helps explain why the film got only a so-so reception when it was first released. Most of Mr. Capra’s pre-World War II movies were so sweet-hearted that they later earned the moniker “Capracorn,” not meant as a compliment.

It’s a Wonderful Life is one of the most critically acclaimed films ever made. Nominated for five Academy Awards including Best Picture, recognized by the American Film Institute as one of the 100 best American films ever made, and placed number 11 on its initial 1998 greatest movie list, it also ranked number one on its list of the most inspirational American films of all time.

Think about that. In light of the fact that hundreds of thousands of movies have been made, this is a jaw-dropping achievement.

By the end of the Second World War, though, the mood of the movie-going public had shifted, as I wrote about the making of the movie in National Review a few years ago HERE.

The next day after it was published, an appreciative email from a woman named Mary Owen arrived in my inbox. Turns out, Mary is the daughter of actress Donna Reed, who played Mary Bailey, the wife of James Stewart’s George Bailey.

I thanked her for the lovely email and we had a few back-and-forths. After my podcast was up on two feet and spreading around the world (110 countries and counting), I thought it would be fun to have her on the show to talk about her mother’s role in this now-international favorite Christmas movie and to learn some back story to her mother’s career and her commitment to writing back to the G.I’s who wrote to her from the trenches and the gun turrets of World War II.

The interview segues nicely into the next one, a rich conversation with actress Karolyn Grimes who played Zuzu, one of the four Bailey kids. Remember Zuzu’s petals? This was a real treat for me who loves the movie so well, and I know it will be for you as well.

I learned, among other things, how much Mrs. Grimes suffered as a teen when her mother died and then the next year her father was killed and she became a ward of the state—then “rescued” by an aunt and uncle in Missouri, which was an unhappy home situation. Karolyn also played Debbie, the daughter of David Niven and Loretta Young in another Christmas favorite, The Bishop’s Wife.

For those of us who can’t gobble up enough trivia and true stories about It’s a Wonderful Life, Mrs. Grimes is a treasure trove of first hand memories and insights! Yes, I was star-struck, okay? Is that so wrong?

In this episode you will learn

  • How Donna Reed’s work represents the best of the Golden Age of television and movies
  • Why she made sure she was “just a regular mom” with Mary and her other real-life children
  • The story of how Reed’s children found a shoebox full of correspondence with American soldiers from the War in her Bel Air home 65 years later
  • Why Owens thinks the movie that made her mother a household name has such enduring appeal
  • Who is the oldest living cast member (hint: it’s not one of the child actors)
  • What it was like to be on set with Frank Capra and to appear with Jimmy Stewart
  • The ways in which It’s a Wonderful Life touched the lives of the cast and crew forever.

Like Santa himself, Tim Gordon and I have made a list, checked it twice, and have found out which Christmas movies are naughty or nice. Tim, as you will remember from Episode 80, is the author of Catholic Republic: How America Will Perish Without Rome and the co-host with Dr. Taylor Marshall on their popular podcast/YouTube channel.

This is a free-wheeling dueling rants about Christmas classics and clunkers from the point of view of cinephilic Catholic dads. Say what you like, but our opinions are correct, I tell you. Well, mine are...

Movies mentioned in this episode:

Here are the movies we discuss with brio, while openly ribbing each other because, well, Advent is penitential:

It’s a Wonderful Life

Elf

Meet John Doe

A Christmas Story

The Bishop’s Wife

Miracle of 34th Street

Die Hard

Love, Actually (pornish as is-- use VidAngel!)

A Christmas Carol (George C. Scott)

Disney’s A Christmas Carol (Jim Carrey)

Joyeux Noel

Departures

Special mention of the remake of 3:10 To Yuma, no extra charge.

And don’t worry, no Christmas movies involving Tim Allen were mentioned. Shudder. You’re welcome.

  • The multiple meanings of “the East” for the Jewish people

Before we get too rah-rah about the “springtime for Christianity” and “the new evangelization,” we need to pay attention to the truth of things. On the ground. Right now. It’s grim. Each year, six times as many Catholics leave the Church as enter it.” By the age of 24, those that leave are already gone and invariably don’t come back. The reasons vary.

Dr. Taylor Marshall, founder of the New Saint Thomas Institute, has not only crunched the numbers but devised a practical solution to this ecclesial bleed out. It’s called Catholic Life Prep. Parents and their teen-aged kids now have a one-stop-shop resource that hits the problem of CFL (collegiate faith loss) head on and provides a massive counter-response of faith, reason, and evangelical passion. Do NOT miss this one.

In this episode you will learn:

  • The leading cause of young people losing the Faith
  • The historical context for the bleed-out
  • Why parents should not blame themselves (unless they shirked their duty to hand on the Faith)
  • The role of both natural law and Scripture to answer objections to the Catholic worldview
  • Why fathers are indispensable to the process of passing on the truths and the example of the Faith
  • What kinds of intellectual tools professors use to destroy students’ Christian faith and how to counter them
