Ryan J. Moreau is a Husband, Father of five, Entrepreneur, Catholic revert, North Idaho transplant and the CEO of Hope Is Fuel, a “movement” he co-founded with Patrick Coffin.  Ryan’s journey to “hope” has not been without some serious bumps and bruises. While he’s experienced the highs and lows that most come to expect with an entrepreneurial career, it was his ten year journey back to the fullness of the faith and his suffering through two serious bouts of anxiety and depression that reminds us all of how God still can draw straight with crooked lines.

With Hope Is Fuel, Ryan is not interested in growing his own personal brand. This project has always been about bringing more truth, greater unity, a stronger community and a life that is deeply rooted in prayer. In fact, when joining Patrick to launch Hope Is Fuel, Ryan has been convicted to make sure that this project remains grounded in Catholic Philosophy while appealing to a wider, more secular audience.

In this Episode You Will Learn

  • The story of how Patrick and Ryan met
  • About his prayer filled journey back to the Catholic faith
  • How Hope Is The Fuel of life and how the “movement” got its name
  • What the most recent Course, “Catholic on Purpose” is all about
  • What to do in a rip current and how that correlates to the Church and culture today
  • Why prayer is the key to connecting with God and how it is the key to having the “eyes to see and ears to hear”
  • What Hope Is Fuel is hoping to accomplish and achieve in the long term
  • The future plans for Hope Is Fuel and what Patrick and Ryan are currently working on

Christopher Guest (Waiting for Guffman, This is Spinal Tap, Best In Show, A Mighty Wind) said, “When it comes to comedy, Tom Leopold has an extra gene. You may not know it, but he has probably made you laugh.” Harry Shearer (The Simpsons, NPR, This Is Spinal Tap) called him “a semi-precious stone in the crown of comedy,” appellations Leopold treasures.

Indeed, he may well be one of the most prolific and successful comedy writers ever, having written for sitcoms in the US and the UK, material for Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Jonathan Winters, Michael McKean, Chris Guest, Chevy Chase, et al.

Raised Jewish, the natural raconteur was baptized and received into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil in 2011. The conservative-minded comedy writer and one-time actor has some fascinating insights into what we call the culture, especially important for the Covid-19 lockdown.

In this episode you will learn

  • Whether comedy is a skill you learn or must be born with
  • How his father’s storytelling tradition shaped young Tom’s imagination
  • What it’s like to meet, and write jokes for, your heroes
  • The time Vice President Mike Pence served him a coffee on Air Force Two enroute to Cleveland where Pence was set to give a talk written by Leopold
  • The meaning of “comedy is tragedy plus time” and “death is easy, comedy is hard”
  • How Jews and Catholics share a love of story

Did you ever wonder why certain movies resonate with audiences all over the world? Why some grab you for two hours in the dark, but then like so much cinematic MSG, you forget these flash-in-the-pans by the time you get to the car – while others hold you in their spell for years?

This is the mystery I explore with Father Robert Spitzer, SJ, president of the Magis Center of Reason and Faith in Irvine, CA. Digging into a fascinating section of his book The Soul’s Upward Yearning: Clues to Our Transcendent Nature from Experience and Reason, Father Spitzer and I talk about the Power of Myth at work in four of the top movie franchises of Hollywood history: Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Lord of the Rings, and The Chronicles of Narnia films.

Turns out, these examples all share certain common elements that invite the viewer (or reader, if the book) into an adventure that forces a choice, a crisis, which leads ultimately a catharsis, or cleansing of the soul. But, as is his wont, the Jesuit scholar goes deeper than the platitudes about nice music and great dialogue. You’ll learn about Rudolf Otto and the numinous, Carl Jung and archetypes, Joseph Campbell and the hero’s journey, and Mircea Eliade and mythical structure.

I know, I know, it this sounds too deep for mere mortals. Give it a chance. Stretching a bit mentally pays handsome dividends, including a new appreciation for what makes great movies great.
